USA Today grades states’ handling of teacher misconduct
USA Today handed out report cards to states February 15 on how well they vet teachers’ licensure applications before granting them a license. How did the states do? There were more F’s than A’s.
In fact, a failing grade was the most common grade. New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Maine, New Hampshire, Michigan, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C all were given the lowest marks.
Even states like Washington, which garnered a “B” grade, were admonished for consistently not making disciplinary actions against teachers readily available to the public. Only Oregon, Alabama, North Dakota, Hawaii, South Carolina, Ohio, and Vermont were given an “A.”
