Salon manager license just a profit machine, legislators charge

Ohio legislators are pushing a bill that would eliminate the requirement that an individual with a state manager license be on site whenever a salon is open for business, according to a late-November report by The Columbus Dispatch. The bill is also backed by one of Ohio’s largest salon operators, notes the report.

In order to achieve a manager license, someone who has already been licensed in cosmetology, for instance, must then complete 300 additional hours of training. According to the Dispatch report, the bipartisan group of legislatures that is sponsoring the bill contends that the manager license requirement for salons “makes no sense” and is simply a profit-making maneuver by private cosmetology schools.

In addition to the extra hours of training, the estimated cost for an individual seeking a manager license is $2,000-$3,000.
