Testmaker pares back reliance on candidate SSNs

Due to data security concerns,social-security-card-image the National Board of Examiners in Optometry announced, it will no longer carry the full social security numbers of optometrists and students on its database. After several fraudulent credit card applications from optometrists were made public back in August, the American Optometric Association called for optometric testing organizations to eliminate the use of 9-digit social security numbers, and in its fall newsletter on Oct. 28, the NBEO answered that call. Said AOA President Andrea P. Thau, OD, “we will continue to press for action, including federal investigation into the breach, to provide peace of mind for our members and colleagues.”
