Doctor entitled to full hearing on his discrimination charge over order that he enter alcohol abuse treatment program

In a September 15 ruling, the Human Rights Tribunal of Alberta overturned a decision by the director of the province's Human Rights Commission to deny a hearing to a physician who claimed the state's College of Physicians and Surgeons had inappropriately discriminated against him by ordering him to enter a residential treatment program for alcohol abuse.

CK, a physician whose identity was protected by the Tribunal, was ordered by the College to attend a residential treatment program and enter into a monitoring . . .
