$225,000 fine against lawyer upheld even though license on inactive status

The Supreme Court of Virginia, in a January 6 decision, upheld a decision by the state's attorney Disciplinary Board to fine an attorney $225,000 for lying to a court about inventory records for a salvage operation that recovered gold from a 19th century ship, holding that the Board still had authority to issue the discipline despite the attorney's placing his license in inactive status.

For several decades until 2014, attorney Richard Robol represented treasure hunter Tommy Thompson, who salvaged the sunken ship SS Central America, which sank in 1857 along with 450 people and millions of dollars . . .
